It's Day 5 of my Six Days of Speedlite Shooting tips.

Today's tip: Study the Works of the Master Painters.

Concept: Study the works of master painters. See how they used shadows and highlights to create their masterpieces. That's what I did for my photograph, "The Girl with a Pearl Earring."

To light my subject, I used one light: Canon 580EX II in the Westcott Apollo soft box.

Once again, you don't need a fancy studio to make nice portraits. I took the photograph in my office.

Digital Rebel DVD on the Way - with a little help from my friends

The DVD is designed to help all Canon Digital Rebel shooters.

I'm working on a new DVD with David Leveen: Getting Started with Your Digital Rebel & Your Digital SLR Photography.

The data DVD will be a collection of my favorite videos from my other Canon Digital Rebel DVDs. Sorta like "Rick's Greatest Canon Digital Rebel Tips."

Data means that you can view all the lessons on your computer, Apple TV, iPad, iPhone and iPad Touch. For mobile device uses, it's like having me by your side for on-site lessons.

Yes, as new Canon Rebels are introduced the images quality goes up and new features are added, like improved video recording and flip out screens. But on all the cameras, many features operate the same way, including the Creative and Automatic modes, white balance, built-in flash and so on. So although I show a feature on one model, the operation and benefits are basically the same on all the models.

Dozens of end-result photographs are also included.

The DVD will also feature my narrated keynote show: "Getting Started with Your Digital SLR Photography."

Six Days of Speedlite Tips: Day 4

It's Day 4 of my Six Days of Speedlite Shooting tips.

Today's tip: Create Dramatic and Colorful Silhouettes.

Concept: Set up a speedlite behind the subject and out of the camera's view. Use a grid on the speedlite to concentrate the light, and use a colored gel to change the color of the background.

I took the images for this post at Photo Plus Expo in the Canon booth. See! You don't need a fancy studio to get cool shots.

Six Days of Speedlite Tips: Day 3

It's Day 3 of my Six Days of Speedlite Shooting tips.

Today's tip: Light Up the Background.

Concept: Use a second speedlite to add some light to the background. This background light is also called a separation light because it separates the subject from the background. Above: Susan Sammon is holding a flash that is fired through some artificial palm leaves. For the opening shot for this post, the flash was fired through the cardboard cutout on the floor behind Susan.

My cardboard cut-out was also used on the two images below. Honl gels were used to add the color.

Six Days of Speedlite Tips: Day 2

It's Day 2 of my Six Days of Speedlite Shooting tips.

Today's tip: Create Terrific Top Light.

Concept: Position the light directly above the subject. Use "voice activated" light stands to save on real light stands. Use a softbox to soften and direct the light.

I used this technique when I photographed photographer Catherine Hall at Google.

Six Days of Speedlite Tips: Day 1

It's Day 1 of my Six Days of Speedlite Shooting tips.

Today's tip: Create Cool Rim Light.

Concept: Position the subject slightly in front of a softbox, as illustrated above. Photograph the subject looking straight ahead (in the opposite direction in which the softbox is facing) so you get a profile. Basically, you want the light coming from slightly in front of and behind the subject.

In the shot above, I am positioning the model. For the end-result shot, I was positioned to the model's left side.

You need to experiment with subject position and flash output to get the shot you want.

BTW: A softbox is a very important accessory. It allows you to control the light to a greater degree than an umbrella or an octodome. More on that in future posts.

Note: The Canon ST-E2 is designed for indoor, line of sight use - although it's worked for me even when speedlites are "hidden" in a soft box. Another option for wireless flash photography are Pocket Wizards. You need both a transmitter and receiver.

Envision the End Result

Yesterday on Google+ I posted the picture above asking folks, "Any guesses?"

I few folks got it right. Below is the original photograph.

The oil stain on the road reminded me of a comet, so I played with the image in Photoshop to create a comet-like image.

The messages here:
- Always have a camera with you.
- Take pictures every day.
- Envision the end result in Lightroom or Photoshop.

If you have been to Photoshop World, you know who gets the award for the best dressed guy: David Ziser. I love David and his work. So I thought I'd put him on the spot and ask him five questions - questions that you may want answered. Away we go!

Welcome David and thanks for being here today. You've excelled as a wedding photographer for many years and you continue traveling the world and teaching and writing about wedding and portrait photography, lighting, Photoshop, Lightroom, and business building skills with your programs and your DigitalProTalk blog is targeting the part time aspiring photographers all the way up to seasoned pros.

1. What are you most recent adventures in that department?

For a solid year I've been working on the most exciting photographic learning opportunity for 2012 - PhotoPro Expo 2012. It is the most important educational event happening in the Midwest this year. I'll fill you in on it a bit later in this post.

I've also committed to producing another book for Kelby Media. This time the topic will be solely and completely on lighting - the title, "Make Your Lighting Exiting!” I'm really looking forward to that. We also have a great year lined up for my blog, DigitalProTalk.com with monthly web-casts from the top educators in the world, lots of articles on wedding and portrait photography, lighting, Photoshop, Lightroom, and success tips for the aspiring photographer - all really good stuff, I'm excited!

2. Do you feel there is a need for photographic education in this brand new digital world of ours?

Oh my gosh, is there. There has been an explosion of new shooters particularly in the wedding market. Everybody with a camera is trying to make an extra dollar or two shooting a wedding. The reality is that many new photographers don't have much of a grasp on how to shoot a wedding and the protocols involved in covering the event. So there is definitely a need for the new photographers to grasp the craft, learn about lighting and composition, and understand the workings of their cameras so they can indeed do a good job for their clients.

3. What's the current state of wedding and portrait photography these days?

Wedding photography has gone throughout a major transition in the last few years. Wedding photography used to be a "man's world" but now the trend is to see many more women entering the field bringing a brand new perspective and sensitivity to wedding coverages. Styles have changed considerable over the last few years as well. We are now seeing the full range of styles from classic traditional, stylized fashion shoots, to straight hands off photojournalistic approach.

Many photographers are still struggling to "find their voice" across that stylistic spectrum. I think photographers really want to do a good job for their clients but so many just don't know how to go about doing it. At this time we most likely have the most shooters with the least experience and technical knowledge ever out there offering wedding and portrait photography services. I don't blame them for trying - it a great field and it's exciting to photograph weddings, especially if you can give the client more than what they are hoping for. The challenges and rewards are certainly worth the effort.

And that's the secret; photographers need to do a great job for their clients. They also need to be personally excited about doing that great job. Photographers that are just in it for the money will never be great wedding photographers. Internalizing the quest for a top quality product will lead you to delivering just that to your client. And guess what; the client will be thrilled with the result and willing to pay for those efforts.

4. Is it that the newest photographers entering the field don't care about photographic education these days?

Oh, I wouldn't go that far. I think if someone wants to do a good job for their client, they certainly DO care about knowing how to get the job done right. Most of the new shooters are relying on the remarks of friends and family telling them how great their photography looks. For most, their photography has never been gauged against their peers.

I have to tell you a quick story. This past summer we held our summer "Hot Shots" photography contest for our PhotoPro Network photographers association. One of my assistants, who also was running a part time photography business, proclaimed that he planned to win the top prize with his entries. After he entered and saw what other professional/peers were entering, he confided that his work was nowhere near the quality of work summated by the seasoned professionals. Thankfully for him, he was able to swallow his pride, reset his expectations, and commit to improving his photography not just for himself, but for his clients as well.

I not surprised by remarks I hear from photographic labs across the country. Most feel the quality of wedding photography is at a low watermark right now. But most feel that that will change in the not too distant future. It's just that there are SOOOO many new shooters that the quality level is skewed in their direction at this time. As they adapt, continue to learn and grow in the profession, so will their skill set and the quality of their photography.

I think part of the reason the quality of wedding photography has dropped so low is that the aspiring pro doesn't know where to go to get the education they need to really excel in their craft.

Photographers today really want to learn and think the only place to get that much needed education is on the web. Web education is good up to a point, but there is something special about attending programs and learning from the top photographic masters in person like Scott Kelby, Vincent Laforet, Joe McNally, Jay Maisel, and of course, Rick Sammon. I think that more intimate connect with the speaker in a live setting greatly enhances the learning experience. You know, when you hear these programs in person, the message just sticks with you in a way that is not easily forgotten.

5. What are some other educational opportunities that not just new photographers, but all photographers can experience this year.

OMG, in just the first 8 weeks of this 2012 students of photography have a fantastic opportunity to learn from the top photographers and educators in the business. Let me give you a quick rundown:

Imaging USA - New Orleans, LA: Jan 14-17, 2012. Top speakers include a few of my favorites; Zack and Jody Gray, a bright young couple who have figured it out and are showing photographers how to think, work, promote, and shoot to be successful in this brand new digital market place. Also presenting are Kent and Sarah Smith, two of the most successful studio owners in the country (gross sales over 1M for the last 3 years) specializing in high school seniors and families. PhotoPro Expo 2012 - Greater Cincinnati, OH, February 2, 3, 4, & 5, 2012. This one is my "baby". I'm president of the hosting organization, PhotoPro Network. A Snapseed a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

I Hate HDR?

When I give an HDR presentation, I usually begin by suggesting to the audience that if they want to have some fun, do a Google search for "I hate HDR."

Hundreds of pages come up. Most HDR haters hate HDR for two reasons:

One, they feel HDR is cheating (although Ansel Adams created HDR images and he was not called a cheater).

Two: they feel most HDR images are "over-cooked."

Here's my take on the topic:

One, why hate any form of creativity?

Two, why take the time to write about why you hate something?

I do think that there are two main types of HDR images: realistic, above, and surrealistic, below.

Often times, I think the subject suggests the HDR effect: realistic for landscapes, and surrealistic for artistic and really cool looking subjects.

I go on to say that as much as I love HDR, it can ruin the mood of the scene, as illustrated by the HDR image at the left.

Finally, I say, "Follow your heart." Or as Ginger Baker wrote, "Do What You Like."

So Psyched About Shooting With These Pros - and You!

One of the cool things about being a professional photographer is that you get to meet and shoot with other pros - and learn from them.

In the February and March I will be doing lighting workshops with two top pros – my friends Dave Cross and Parish Kohanim.

Two Essential Filters for Outdoor Photographers

Two filters are essential for outdoor photography.

A polarizing filter reduces reflections on water, glass and ice. It can even make your pictures look sharper because it reduces reflections on atmospheric haze.

Polarizing filter tip: Don't over-polarize a scene. If you "dial in" too much of the polarizing effect, you may get a large dark spot in the center of your frame.

A variable neutral density (ND) filter reduces the amount of light entering your lens, allowing you to shoot at slower shutter speeds to blur water on bright, sunny days.

ND filter tip: Experiment with different shutter speeds to get just the right degree of water movement.

These filters are a must for those participating in my Oregon Coast workshop with Alex Morley.

"Socialize or Succumb" is the New "Publish or Perish"

When I started out in the photo biz in 1979 as editor of Studio Photography, the buzz phrase for photographers was, "Publish or Perish." If a photographer did not get his or her name out there, they had a good chance of disappearing from the photo scene. I saw that happen more than a few times.

Today, the same philosophy holds true. A photographer must get his or her name out there or run the risk of falling by the wayside. I see that happening more and more . . . and more.

The photographers who are hurting - or not growing - have one thing in common: they have not embraced social media, using free tools like Google+ (the best social media tool), facebook and twitter to gain a following.

So my friends, you need to "Socialize or Succumb."

Sure, all that sitting-at-the-computer time takes time - and takes time away from shooting and processing. But that time will be well spent, generating new contacts and new business.

Perhaps as a New Year's resolution you can set aside some time each day to socialize your photography. The more you put in, the more you'll get out.

Blast Off at Bosque

Our group was treated to an amazing "blast off." (That's mist at the bottom of the frame.)

For those of you new to Bosque, the "blast off" usually lasts for less than one minute. I took the opening image for this post with my Canon 24-105mm IS lens.

Later that day . . . . Here's a close-up of two snow geese flying by the moon. Yes! I created the image in Photoshop. I can show you how to do this on my workshops - as well as how to enhance your images.

Spectacular Sunrise

This morning we went on a scouting mission. Here are a few of my shots, along with some tips.

My gear: Canon EOS 7D and EOS 5D Mark II; Canon 100-400mm IS, Canon 400mm DO and Canon 24-105mm IS.

Above: Get on site before sunrise. Expose for the highlights. Don't be afraid to boost your ISO; you can reduce the noise later in Lightroom or Photoshop.

Above: For dramatic blastoff shots, shoot with a 24-105mm lens. To add some color to the sky, use the User Defined Gradual Filter in Nik Color Efex Pro. To get a discount on Nik plug-ins, and to see what other plug-ins I use, click here.

Above: Experiment with the placement of the horizon line in the frame. To enhance the color in a scene, try the Spicify filter in Topaz Adjust. Info on Topaz on my Creative Plug-ins page along with Nik info.

Above: Speaking of looking up. . . . Shoot straight up. Experiment with creative cropping in the digital darkroom. Usually, dead center is deadly. And, use AI Servo Focus to track birds in flight.

Above: Focus on the eye. If it's not well lit and in focus, you've missed the shot.

Shooting Silhouettes

Why do we like silhouettes? I would like to hear your suggestions here on my blog – or on Google+.

Maybe it's because silhouettes are more dramatic than photographs in which we can see details.

Maybe it's because millions of years ago we looked for prey and predators at sunrise and sunset . . . when there is a changing of the guard between the nighttime and daytime animals . . . and when there is the greatest danger of being eaten. Actually, that is my theory. Subconsciously, we are always on the lookout for danger. Another theory: silhouettes can simply be pretty. :-)

Whatever the reason, silhouettes are fun to take and create. Here are a few tips:

– Slightly underexpose your image. That will darken the shadows for a more dramatic image.

– Shoot toward the sun.

– Increase the contrast and color in Lightroom or Photoshop.

– Increase the saturation in the digital darkroom.

– Look for a clean background.

Here's another tip: Think color. If the background has little or no color, add color. In all of these images I added a touch of color with Nik Software's Color Efex Pro. To get a discount on all Nik plug-ins, as well as some of the other plug-ins I use, click here.

It's Not Easy Having Fun

Last night I gave our workshop student my talk on composition, and I put my own tips to use this morning - using background and foreground elements to complement the main subject.

My Kelby training class on composition will be on line on Monday. For now, if you shoot with Canon cameras, check out my Canon classes. I will be posting a preview of the class on Monday here on my blog.

I took the tele shots here with my Canon 7D and Canon 100-400mm IS lens. I took the wide-angle shots with my Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 17-40mm lens.

For all of these images I used Nik Software's Color Efex Pro: Graduated filters on the first two images, and the Polaroid Transfer filter on the last image.

Plug-ins Can Help Create Painterly and Cool Effects

Think like a painter." That's what I suggested to the students who are attending the Bosque del Apache photography workshop that I and Juan Pons are currently teaching.

When you start to think like a painter, you might produce more artistic images.

Last night, while we were freezing our buns off at sunset, I was thinking like a painter. I wondered how a painter might capture the scene, which included sandhill cranes, the moon and a clear sky.

I took a few shots of the moon with my Canon 400mm DO lens w/1.4x converter which was mounted on my Canon 7D. Then I started to photograph the sandhill cranes with the same setup. I was looking for groups of three birds, following the "rule of odds" composition rule. For more on composition, check out my Composition class on Kelby training.

Back in my toasty room, I created a montage in Photoshop CS5.

I used two plug-ins to remove some of the photographic reality from the scene.

On the sandhill crane layer, I first used the Midnight filter in Nik Color Efex Pro. Then, on the same layer, I used the Crisp filter in Topaz Adjust.

I added the drop shadow as a Layer Style in Photoshop.

I teach all this stuff on my workshops - shooting and using Photoshop (and Lightroom).

Above is photograph I took at the "golden hour." I enhanced the color with the Bi-color User Defined filter in Nik's Color Efex Pro.

HDR plug-ins and programs can help you create cool images, too.

Above: I used Photomatix Pro to create this cool image. Earlier this week I posted an HDR image of the same scene - minus the snow.

There are other great photo ops in Bosque.... especially if you are into HDR photography.

Today Juan Pons, Chris Klapheke and I took our workshop students on a cool HDR shoot in a junkyard.

When it comes to HDR photography, you'll get the coolest images when shooting in a high contrast situation - such as shooting from indoors to outdoors, which includes shooting from inside a car.

Above is one of my favorite images from our HDR shoot. I used the Canon 8-15mm fisheye lens on my Canon 5D Mark II. I created the image in Photomatix with a touch of Topaz Adjust (to bring out the grain in the leather seats). Below is another Topaz Adjust image.

Above is another HDR image I shot today. I could have brought out more of the details in the shadows, but.... shadows are the soul of the photographs, shadows are your friend... and light illuminates, shadows define.

So what about the birds today?

We saw tons of birds. Above: I used my Canon 400mm DO lens on my Canon 7D.

Tips: Crop creatively; crop out the dead space. Use focus tracking (AI Servo) when photographing moving subjects.

Shoot silhouettes. Use Nik Color Efex Pro's Gradual Filter to change the color of the sky. Again, see my plug-ins page to get a discount on the plug-ins I use, including Nik.

Leave some room in the frame into which the subject can fly.

Shoot with both eyes open so you can see other subjects that can enhance (or ruin) an image. Watch the background, too.

Elephants in the Mist

My friend Judith Monteferrante just sent this to me. Enjoy.

I explored South Africa for 12 days while at Kirkman’s Camp in the Sabi Sands area near Kruger National Park. I went out shooting before dawn every day while the mist lingered from the night’s cooler air and again late into dusk. One morning, a group of elephants appeared out of this mist walking down a wide path, appearing like an apparition at dawn. The light was challenging but magical.

I call this image, "Elephants in the Mist."

Who Are Your Photographer Heroes?

I first published this post in January 2011. As the new year begins, I thought it would be a good idea to repost it - and ask you: Who are your photographer heroes?

Back in 1979, when I was the editor of Studio Photography magazine, one of my heroes was Alfred Eisenstaedt. The man was amazing, as a photographer and as a human being. His work still inspires me today.

I had the opportunity to attend and photograph Eisie's 80th birthday party. I also had the wonderful opportunity to interview the master. I still have the issue in which my interview ran.

Back in the late '70s, I also had the wonderful opportunity to interview many of the other photographer greats of the time, including Arthur Rothstein, one of the most well-known and respected FSA photographers.

Look up FSA if you are too young to know what FSA means.

Another favorite was Andreas Feininger.

I also interviewed now fellow Canon Explorers of Light Harry Benson and Robert Farber. (Yes! We have been around and have known each other for more than 30 years!)

Man o man. Do you know what an honor it is to have known and know these pros?

I still enjoy - very much so - interviewing pros for the DEP podcas t that I do with Juan Pons.

I think we all need heroes in our lives - photographer heroes who inspire and motive us.

Back in 1979, I used my Canon Vt to photograph Eisie's B-Day party. I still have it, but now use my Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 7D.

Stuff My Parents Told Me That Can Help Your Business

As the year comes to a close, I am thinking about past holidays. Naturally, my dearly departed parents come to mind. I am thinking about all the stuff they taught me - and how it actually has helped my business . . . not to mention my life.

Check it out, starting with my dad's advice.

1) It takes a lot of peanuts to feed an elephant. My dad, who lived through the depression, encouraged me to make, and save, as many pennies as possible. This is sound business advice. Pennies add up, quicker than you might imagine.

Want to feed the elephant? Sign up for as many affiliate and associate programs as possible. Get into as many on-line sales opportunities as possible. Get into apps! With apps, potential sales are worldwide, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

After writing 36 books, I am done with books. It's only apps (and DVDs and on-line training) for me.

2) Even the President of the United States puts his pants on one leg at a time. My dad was telling me that we are basically all the same. He was offering me encouragement: If one man can do it, so can you.

3) Hard work pays off. My dad never really said that, but he was a great example of that philosophy.

I vividly remember one snow holiday in the early 1950s, when it used to snow heavily in New York, when he put on his hat, coat and buckle boots (which I don't think they make any more) and walked a few miles to the train station – while it was still snowing. He had an important meeting in New York City that he could not miss. He always wanted to do the best job possible. His hard work paid off. He died last year at age 92 in his own home, and could still afford to live comfortably. What more could you ask for?

So my friends: work hard and save those peanuts.

Okay. Now it's my mother's turn:

1) Someone is always watching.

This is great advice to keep in mind in designing and posting stuff on your web site/blog. You never know who is watching. Someone may be watching who needs exactly what you have to offer. He or she may be a millionaire and may have a few bucks to spend on you!

Keep your site/blog up to date with the best you can offer.

Also: know your audience. Post, write and design for your specific audience.

2) Always sandwich a criticism with compliments.

If you feel as though you need to criticize another photographer's work, don't just jump in with criticism. Rather, try to encourage the person to do better - before and after you get to your point.

3) Never give up.

Every time I got a rejection letter or email, I thought about this quote. Sooooo glad I followed my mother's advice.

I know it sounds easy, especially when you are down. However, don't let others get you down. Also remember that timing is everything. A "no" today could be a "yes" tomorrow.

4) To thine own self be true.

Ya know, I really did not like it when my mother used this quote. However, it's really good advice for photographers. Be true to yourself. Follow your heart. Photograph what you love.

5) Sticks and stones can break your bones, but names can never hurt you.

Today, it's easy to hide behind fake names on the internet and post bad book, app and photo reviews. Ask my buddy Trey Ratcliff about it. And, check out his dramatic reading of his negative books reviews.

Don't listen to what others say while hiding. In fact, don't listen to negative comments from folks who just set out to be mean. Their comments often say more about themselves than you!

6) Don't curse.

I vividly remember my mother washing out my mouth with a new, big and white bar of IVORY soap after I used a curse word. Well, I am not saying that today I am a saint, but I never use an inappropriate word on the web. I have dropped people from facebook and twitter for doing just that. I don't want to be associated with 'em. So, keep it clean and you will not offend anyone.

7) Be a good listener.

When I went on my first date, my mother told me to be a good listener. This was good advice, as I got a second date. :-)

Today, we must be good listeners on Google+, twitter, facebook and in the comments section on our blogs. You can't just talk - you must listen. Get to know your audience.

Along the lines of being a good listener, remember this: There is always room for improvement.
