I'm Teaching Speedlite Shooting at Photo Plus Expo in NYC This Week

I'm teaching speedlite shooting at Photo Plus Expo this week in NYC. I'll be at the Canon booth on Thursday at 1 and 2 PM and on Saturday at 10 AM.

For those of you who can't join the fun, here is a list of the accessories that I'll cover during my session.

I give speedlite demos all across the country - and around the world - on my workshops.

The concept: You can get dramatic photographs when using just one light, as illustrated by the above photograph, which I took using one Canon Speedlite in a Westcott Apollo softbox.

For those interested in speedlite photography, here is my list of essential (and versatile) speedlite accessories.

Westcott Apollo 28-inch softbox - my main accessory. With a recessed diffusion panel, this softbox shapes the light more so than an umbrella, which spreads the light.

Westcott 6-in-1 reflector kit - used for adding or subtracting light.

Honl gear: 1/8 inch Grid, Gel kit, Speedstrap - for adding color to the light and for sharping the light.

My speedlites: Canon 600EX-RT. Triggered with Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3- RT.

I took the photograph above with my Westcott Apollo softbox. Set up shows the softbox placement in relationship to the subject.

To create the pattern on the wall behind the model in the above photograph, I placed a blue gel over my speedlite (fitted with a Honl grid) and fired it through a pice of cardboard with cut-out slats.

In the opening photograph for this post, my Westcott Apollo softbox was placed to camera left. In the photograph above, it was positioned above the model.

I use speedlites and my accessories outdoors, too - as illustrated by the photographs above and below.

For tips on speedlites and lighting, see my apps: Rick Sammon's 24/7 Photo Buffet and Rick Sammon's Light It! - listed on my apps page.
