I just learned
that my good friend Randy Van Duinen had a really great week. Randy is an
architectural and landscape photographer in St. Petersburg, Florida. He and I have
worked on The Digital Photo Workshops. Most recently, we were bitten by fire ants while photographing at the Air Stream Ranch.
Last week at the Florida Professional
Photographers convention Randy took first place in both the landscape and
architectural categories, along with the Best of Show in the commercial
category. His greatest award came when it was announced that he was named
Florida Professional Photographer of the Year. But, his week wasn’t finished as
he received news from the Professional Photographers of America that three of
his images merited and two of them had also been placed in the Loan Collection
from the International Photographic Competition.
I asked Randy if
he had any advice after achieving many awards in one week and he said that
advice would be two things: First don’t be afraid to enter competition and if
possible to listen to what the judges are saying and learn from those critiques.
Second, join a photography organization, whether it is a professional group or
a camera club. The information and feedback you receive from belonging to these
kinds of groups is a great way to further your photographic development.
