The Camera Looks Both Ways
I photographed this man in India a few years back. Then, as now, travel portraits are still my favorite photographic challenge.
Quick tip: Remember that the camera looks both ways, in picturing the subject, you are also picturing a part of yourself. You are a mirror.
Another quick tip: The eyes are the windows to the soul. Some credit Karsh for that adage, but it actually dates back to the ancient Greeks.
My photograph was originally a color shot (Kodachrome). Being inspired my Karsh of Ottawa's photograph of Ernest Hemingway (who also had a cool beard and textured skin in the Karsh photograph), I converted the image to black and white and did a bit of Photoshop work.
Quick tip: Do a search on Karsh of Ottawa (who I interviewed in 1978) for some portrait inspiration.
