Take a Guess: Compact Camera or SLR?

Hey all,

You know the old saying: Cameras don't take pictures, people do.

Well, I took two of these pictures with my compact camera and two with my digital SLR. All are captive animals.

Take guess. Which is which?

I am giving a free talk at B&H in NYC on Feb 21 on compact camera photography. Most of the tips apply to shooting with entry-level digital SLRs, too. Check my Events page for the link (when it's up, which should be soon).

Until then, you might want to check out my latest book, Confessions of a Compact Camera Shooter on my Books page.

If you already have my book, please don't spoil the fun for others by revealing which is which. Thanks!

Here's a tip from the book: When photographing people and animals, focus on they eyes.

Explore the light,

P.S. All my gear is listed on this page of my site.

Can't tell. Maybe if we saw the originals in PS or ACR. Just got an SD780 and it's a blast.

I think the Golden (or Tawny) Eagle and the owl were taken with your compact. It's difficult to tell, though because, like you said, camera's don't take pictures, people do.

I'm pretty sure the Owl in the upper right was with the SLR just because of the DOF on it. I'd guess the golden eagle in the upper right, but hard to tell at that size.

The biggest differences I noticed when I moved from a compact to a DSLR were:

1) Depth of field - much better separation between the subject and the background giving the photos more of a pop.

2) ISO Noise - DSLR's are much better because of the larger sensors

Given that, it's going to be awfully hard to tell the difference between a compact and a DSLR in a photo that small. But yes, if you've got a well lit, well composed shot, any decent compact or DSLR will yield solid results.

It's difficult to say on such small reproductions, but on factors other than pixel-peeping, I'd say the two on the left were taken with the compact and the two on the right were taken with the SLR.

Based on DoF, the two on the left are compact and the two on the right are DSLR

Left is P&S and right is SLR

I agree w/ others: Out of a compact camera are on the left, out of a dslr camera are on the right. Based on DoF.

Top Right: DSLR
Bottom Left: DSLR

Compact = left side
dslr = right side

I'll take a swing at this :)

left column = compact
right column = SLR

So? Rick, are you going to tell us?

The top two pictures were taken with my digital SLR (1D Mark II). The bottom two pictures were taken with my compact camera (G10) - on the same day at a local birding event. I was very close to all the birds.
